What is shirodhara and its Benefits

Shirodhara is a more relaxed and therapeutic based ayurvedic healing technique that offers enormous physical and mental benefits. The word Shirodhara is derived from two Sanskrit words. ā€˜Shiroā€™ (head) and ā€˜Dharaā€™(flow). Practically, a regulated flow of lukewarm herbal liquid is poured over the forehead continuously, which creates a soothing sensation. This sensation goes to the hypothalamus via the peripheral nerves.

During the therapy the oil is poured from a certain height for a specific time. Liquid run through the scalp and into the hair. Shirodhara treatment offers countless benefits and is extremely beneficial for the mind and body. This process stimulates vital points on the head specially the Ajna marma. Stimulation of Ajna marma brings stability in the mind and consciousness. According to authentic Ayurvedic texts Ajna marma is the key point where the vital life force circulates, hence it is called ā€˜Third eye chakraā€™ as well. Furthermore, Shirodhara balances the doshas in the body, specially very beneficial for people with vata pitta imbalance and enhances the functioning of the nervous system.

In Authentic Ayurvedic texts it is called by various names such as Shiro sheka, shiro parisheka, shirashek etc. However, it can be categorized into four main types based on the liquid which is used for the treatment.
